Privacy Policy

Lexeme is a free Bible study tool provided by Love Church. This page explains what data is collected when you use Lexeme, where it lives, and what you can do about it. Lexeme is anonymous-by-default: you can use every feature without an account.

What we collect

Browsing the Bible, lexicons, cross-references, calendar, topics, and reading plans requires no account and sends no personal data to any server. The only data ever collected is:

• Optional account email. If you sign in from the Account page, your email address is stored by Supabase (eu-central-1) so we can send you a one-time sign-in link and link your future bookmarks, highlights, and reading-plan progress to your account for cross-device sync. We do not store a password (Lexeme uses passwordless magic links) and we do not send marketing email. You can sign out, export your data, or permanently delete the account at any time from the Account page.
• Vercel Analytics (page views and basic usage metrics). Cookieless and privacy-friendly by design; no IP addresses or personal identifiers are stored. Vercel's privacy policy is at vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy.

Your rights (GDPR)

Lexeme honours the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation. If you have a Lexeme account, you can exercise these rights yourself from the Account page; you do not need to email us first.

• Right of access (Art. 15) and data portability (Art. 20). Sign in, open the Account page, and press Export my data (JSON). The download contains your account email and user-id, plus every row Lexeme has stored against your account in the cross-device sync tables (theme setting, bookmarks, highlights, and reading-plan completions).
• Right to erasure (Art. 17). Sign in, open the Account page, press Delete my account, and confirm with your email. This permanently deletes your account record and cascades to every row in Lexeme's sync tables tied to it. The action is irreversible and completes in real time. The local copy in your browser is untouched (you can clear it yourself via your browser's site-data controls). Note that Supabase, the platform we use for authentication, retains anonymised auth log entries referencing the deleted user-id for a short forensics retention window, per Supabase's privacy policy.
• Right to rectification (Art. 16). The only personal field stored is your email. To change it, either contact Love Church via love-church.com and we will update the address on your account, or use the export → delete → sign-in-with-new-email path from the Account page (this carries your bookmarks across via the JSON export, which a future build of Lexeme will be able to re-import).
• Right to lodge a complaint (Art. 77). You may contact your local supervisory authority. For users in the EEA, the authority directory is at edpb.europa.eu.

Your browser's local storage

Lexeme saves data in your browser's localStorage so your preferences and study state carry over between visits. This data never leaves your device and is not sent to any server. Items stored include:

• Your chosen colour theme (light / dark / system)
• Your preferred Bible translation
• Reader display preferences (verse mode, paragraph mode, interlinear)
• Concordance display-mode preference
• Your bookmarks and highlights
• Your reading-plan progress and study tracker
• Your recent search terms
• Dismissal flags for in-app prompts (install prompt, teaching cards, Shabbat banner)

You can clear this at any time by clearing your browser's site data for lexeme.love-church.com.

IndexedDB search cache

The full-Bible search uses a sizeable index file (around 10 MB for the BSB, similar for the KJV). Lexeme caches these indices in your browser's IndexedDB so search stays fast on return visits and so the indices do not need to be re-downloaded each time you open the site. Like localStorage, IndexedDB never leaves your device. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data for lexeme.love-church.com.

Service worker and offline cache

Lexeme installs a service worker that caches the app shell (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, fonts, icons) and any Bible chapters or lexicon entries you visit, so they continue to work when you are offline. You can also add Lexeme to your home screen and launch it like an app. This cache lives only in your browser, never leaves your device, and is not sent to any server. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data for lexeme.love-church.com.

Cookies

Lexeme does not set any cookies. Vercel Analytics uses a cookieless approach and does not require a cookie consent banner under GDPR.

Third-party data sources

All Bible text, lexicon data, cross-references, and calendar data are loaded from Lexeme's own servers as static files. No data is fetched from third-party APIs at runtime. Full attribution for the data sources used is at lexeme.love-church.com/attributions.html.

Authentication (optional account)

The optional sign-in flow uses Supabase Auth. When you submit your email on the Account page, Supabase stores the email and sends you a one-time magic link. We do not store passwords. Session tokens live in your browser's localStorage on lexeme.love-church.com and never on love-church.com or any other origin. Supabase is hosted in eu-central-1; their privacy policy is at supabase.com/privacy.

Data retention

Account data persists until you delete your account from the Account page. There is no automatic deletion after a period of inactivity; we would rather you returned years later to find your bookmarks intact. If Lexeme were ever discontinued, we would give 90 days' notice and a one-click export, then delete the production database.

Children

Lexeme is suitable for all ages, but accounts (and therefore email storage) are intended for users 13 and over. Children may use Lexeme without an account freely; the localStorage data described above stays on their device.
